The controversy about vivisection

in Edwardian England between 1903 and 1910.

The original statue, 

by Joseph Whitehead (1906),

first erected in Battersea.

Anti-vivisectionists commissioned the statue

of the brown dog as a memorial.

Its plaque read

"Men and women of England,

how long shall These things be?"

The University of London had been carrying out

awful vivisections that came to light

after a group of Swedish activist women

would witness such sessions.

Students of Medicine frequently 

vandalised the statue.

Anti-doggers rioted London one night in 1907

fighting suffragettes, trade unionists and policemen.

The authorities removed the statue one night 

in 1910 to melt it and destroy it...

A new statue was erected 

also in Battersea Park in 1985
